Beginning Wheel Throwing – Ages 16+
Learn the basics of throwing pottery with an understanding of ceramic terms and processes needed to use the pottery studio safely and independently. Topics include centering clay, throwing basic forms, crafting handles and glazing. Sessions include demonstrations and practice time under the guidance of the instructor, as well as glaze, firing, and access to the studio during scheduled open studio time. Attendance to the first class and the glazing class is mandatory. Clay must be purchased from the museum. You may bring your own tools or purchase them at the museum. (Open studio times subject to change – call the front desk in advance to verify studio schedule.) All levels welcome; if you are taking this course and have experience, please know that only beginning instruction will be provided.

Glaze Lab 1-Day Workshop – Ages 16+
Are you ready for a deep dive on ceramic glazing techniques? This 1-day class is all about exploring tips, tricks, and techniques for making the most of your glazed surfaces. This class begins with identifying the do’s and don’ts of proper glazing to improve glazing success and to avoid common flaws. Students then go through a series of demonstrations and hands-on experiments including wax resist techniques, layering, stamping, pouring, trailing, dripping, and more. Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed a ceramics course at the museum. Students are required to bring unglazed bisque-fired pieces from a prior CSMoA class to glaze; no outside clay bodies allowed.

Further develop your handbuilding skills such as pinching, coiling, hard and soft slab construction, and learn to add flair through finishing touches such as feet and handles and combination techniques to grow your personal style in clay. Sessions include demonstrations and practice time under the guidance of the instructor, as well as glaze, firing, and access to the studio during scheduled open studio time. Ceramics Guided Open Studio – Ages 16+
Guided Open Studio is all about working on your own projects at your own pace, without instruction. Each week an instructor will be present to show unique demonstrations, give pointers, tips, and feedback, but you will be working independently on projects. Take your ceramic work to the next level in this stimulating creative environment tailored to improving your specific projects. Prerequisite: Students must have taken Beginning or Continuing Handbuilding or Wheel Throwing at the museum. To use the wheel students must have successfully completed Beginning or Continuing Wheel Throwing. To handbuild, students must have completed any clay course.

Ceramic Jewelry Creation 2-Week Class
Bring together your artistry and your sense of fashion with this 2-week ceramic jewelry course! Wearing art is an ancient tradition, and ceramic jewelry predates many forms of fashion across the globe. Create your own pendant necklace, brooch, and earrings with a professional teaching artist. On the first day of class you will create and glaze the ceramic parts of your jewelry set, which will then be fired by the museum before the second class. The second week of class you will assemble your set with cord, clips, and hooks. This is a beginner level course and clay forming experience is not required! Supplies included.

Have you ever been curious about working with clay, but felt unsure of committing to a whole course? Then this is the class for you! Pottery Sampler allows you to come into our Ceramics studio and try out working with clay on the potters’ wheel. After the single session, you will select one piece and we will dry, fire and glaze your work (you will select the glaze color.) Once your work is completed you will be contacted for pickup. Portrait Drawing 1-Day Intensive
Ever dreamed of drawing a portrait, but thought it would be too challenging? Set amongst the art in the museum’s gallery, this class immerses students in a crash course of how forms, values, halftones, hard/soft lines, and relationship lines can be used to construct the face. With the knowledge of what lies beneath the skin, coupled with learning about structural planes, students will gain understanding of how to complete a portrait from a photo reference. Beginning students and those with prior experience are welcome! A one-hour lunch break is held at the midpoint of the class, so bring along a sack lunch or plan to visit a local restaurant. It’s time to start learning to paint! Grab a brush, a canvas, and paint – but which paint? Acrylic, and Watercolor, and Gouache, oh my! With all the choices available it can be hard to know which paint is best for you. This workshop will make it easy to know by introducing you to the working properties of Acrylic, Watercolor, and Gouache paints. In the end you will gain insightful tips and tricks from our knowledgeable instructor and have created your own handy reference guide on paper. Looking for one on one instruction? Private classes are great for artists that are interested in developing their skills and advancing them to the next level. These special lessons are especially great for artists who prefer focused one on one instruction or for someone who can’t make it to a scheduled group class.
