SUMMARY:POTTERY WORKSHOP: Tell Your Own Texture Story (Every Texture Tells a Story\, Don’t It)
DESCRIPTION:Join ceramic artist Cheryl Brown of Cielo Clayworks for a hands-on pottery experience telling your own unique texture story through clay. Here’s what you’ll do: 🖌️ Grab three of your favorite found objects to create your own story by pressing a design into clay slabs to form a functional tumbler! Examples could be: 🖌️ A locket or piece of jewelry that means a lot to you 🖌️ Flowers 🖌️ Other sentimental small items 🖌️ The Museum will also have items available for you to use to make an impression Participants will learn foundational pottery skills while creating a personal texture story. Your completed tumbler will be bisque fired and glazed with a studio glaze of your choice. Ceramic artist Cheryl Brown began exploring clay over forty years ago. Receiving her M.F.A. from Amsterdam’s Gerrit Reitveld Academie\, her handbuilt earthenware structures and vessels have been featured in South Florida\, her native Midwest\, and in galleries and art collections throughout Europe. Driven by the clay’s characteristic qualities\, Cheryl employs a controlled\, yet random\, manipulation of the clay in various states of plasticity that defines the form and reveals its innate tactile traits. Whether creating a vessel or working abstractly\, her common denominator is marked by that which mankind has in common. Saturday\, October 26 | 2 – 4:30 pm \n\n\n\n$45 per person

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Tides and Currents
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTIONThursday\, November 7 2024 | 5:30pm-8:00pmFree and open to the public. \n\n\n\n(This event\, originally scheduled for Thursday\, October 17th has been postponed to Thursday\, November 7th 2024.) \n\n\n\nCoral Springs Museum of Art is presenting a new exhibition featuring Julia Zurilla\, Michelle Drummond\, Holly Hanessian\, Evelyn Politzer\, Sharon Lee Hart\, & Aria Nicolette Tan showcased in the Main & East Gallery. \n\n\n\nWater is both a source of life and a force that shapes the fate of entire communities. Tides and Currents explores humanity’s complex and evolving relationship with water\, as it serves as a vital resource\, a pathway for migration\, and a force of nature that demands both respect and adaptation. The exhibition introduces stories of migration across seas with the multimedia work from Julia Zurilla—where water becomes both a bridge to new opportunities and a perilous\, unpredictable expanse. For many\, the ocean is a symbol of hope and survival\, but also a reminder of the risks and tragedies that define the refugee and migrant experience as they navigate dangerous waters in search of safety and a better life. \n\n\n\nAlongside these stories are the urgent realities faced by communities with limited access to potable water\, illustrated with the fabric art works by Michelle Drummond. In these communities\, clean water is a luxury\, and the struggle for its availability defines daily life. This scarcity highlights the inequalities that persist globally\, forcing us to confront our own water consumption practices and the critical importance of environmental stewardship. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also transports us to fishing villages\, where life has long been intertwined with the rhythms of the sea. The paintings from Aria Tan from the body of work Fish Market showcase different scenarios of daily live from a fishing community. Here\, water is more than a resource—it is a way of life. Yet even these resilient communities face new challenges\, from dwindling marine stocks to the growing threat of sargassum blooms\, which choke coastal ecosystems and disrupt marine environments by smothering habitats and entangling animals. In response\, Sharon Lee Hart brings washed-ashore seaweed to her darkroom creating unique photographs that document its intricate structures. \n\n\n\nAs climate change accelerates\, hurricanes and severe storms pose ever-greater threats\, requiring preparedness and adaptation. Holly Hanessian presents Hurricane Emergency Art Kit\, which focuses on sustainable water practices and is filled with hand-made porcelain objects to use while waiting out a storm. Her work considers the ways communities brace for these natural disasters\, highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of those living in coastal areas. Artifacts of hurricane preparedness underscore the importance of readiness in the face of intensifying storms. Featuring the beauty and fragility of the natural environment\, Evelyn Politzer’s fiber art works reminds us on the importance of water conservation\, and the delicate balance in nature. \n\n\n\nIn Tides and Currents\, we are reminded that water—whether as a source of migration\, scarcity\, sustenance\, or danger—defines our shared human experience. The exhibition challenges us to consider our role in preserving this precious resource\, our responsibility in reducing consumption\, and our need for solidarity with those most affected by water’s unpredictable power. Through diverse artistic expressions\, the exhibition paints a picture of resilience\, adaptation\, and survival in a world shaped by water.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: "Style Masters: The Birth of the Graffiti Movement"
DESCRIPTION:The Coral Springs Museum of Art will welcome “Style Masters: The Birth of the Graffiti Movement” on view from Friday\, July 18 to Saturday\, October 4. The exhibit\, which is organized by the Museum of Graffiti and curated by Alan Ket\, will showcase the evolution and art of the American Graffiti movement. \nOpening Reception\nFriday\, July 18\n6 to 9 PM\nMembers Only Preview: 5 to 6 PM\n\n\nRSVP Below \n  \n\nAbout the Exhibition: \n\nWelcome to a survey of the evolution of aerosol art and culture\, its roots in New York City as a 1970s teenage pastime\, its explosion in popularity on the City’s walls and trains\, and how it went global to become the largest and most powerful art movement in recorded history. Breaking away from centuries of public graffiti that communicated messages of God\, love\, political beliefs\, or just plain humor – youth in New York City and Philadelphia began writing their names in flamboyant\, individualized fonts on any public surface they could find. This practice\, later called Style Writing\, served as art training for youth who lacked formal classes or approved creative outlets. Within a decade a new worldwide art movement emerged. It was rebellious\, expressive and led by teenagers committed to leaving a mark on society. Early documentation of this vivid art form by photographers including Keith Baugh\, Robert Browning\, Henry Chalfant\, Martha Cooper\, Don 1\, Flint Gennari\, John Naar\, Jim Prigoff and SJK171 allow us to see the long-gone early wall and train works of graffiti writers. Works on canvas by Blade\, Delta2\, Doze Green\, Kel First\, Phase2\, Tracy168\, Quik\, Sonic 002 and many others capture the energy and power of the early style masters. Works on paper dating back as early as 1973\, by artists such as Cos 207\, Fuzz One\, Part One\, Lee Quiñones\, and Chain 3 showcase the wide range of styles and the creative development within the art form. Site-specific installations by Disem\, Reds\, Tragek\, and Weerdo highlight local Florida styles as well as dialogue between artists transnationally. \n\nThe exhibition is supported\, in part\, by the City of Coral Springs\, the Broward County Cultural Division\, BBX Capital\, Funding Arts Broward\, and Montana Colors.
