SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION: Tres - Garden of Memories\, Lexicon de Plantas\, & Water State by Alejandra Abad
DESCRIPTION:Register on Eventbrite\n\n\nThis exhibition\, opening Friday\, January 17th\, 2024 presents TRES\, an interactive exhibition presented and crafted by Alejandra Abad. \n\n\n\nAlejandra Abad’s themes relate to her own memories and belonging by exploring her relationship to space and the moving image; indoor and outdoor projections express cyclical change and transformation. She works in a Magical Realist style that recontextualizes the extraordinary moments of the everyday in reimagined environments\, most recently in experimental animations that depict various topics regarding the audience’s memories of connecting to community and nature in South Florida. \n\n\n\nThis sequence of projects began in the Fall of 2023 through partnerships with various cities and art spaces\, beginning with transforming hand-drawn memories by recomposing constituent elements into new forms that mirror the cyclical processes of nature; i.e.\, the natural world transforms into drawings\, and then the drawings transform into animations and those into hanging sculptures and layering of materials and textures. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition at the Coral Springs Museum of Art presents the trajectory of the projects that began in the Fall of 2023: Garden of Memories\, Lexicon de Plantas\, and Water State. \n\n\n\nConceptGarden of Memories (2023) mixes various materials to create drawings and cut-outs to assemble animations of memories relating to Alejandra’s grandfather’s garden in Venezuela. Throughout her residency at Bailey Contemporary Arts she invited people to share their own stories related to plants by scanning a QR code. The stories formed the basis of various playful indoor and outdoor interpretations and activations of the installation (outdoor projections\, claymation\, paper cut-outs\, collages\, etc.). \n\n\n\nLexicon de Plantas (2024) is a large-scale audiovisual and site-specific art installation featuring a typewritten poem by her grandfather\, and drawings and animations of memories of plants from the artist and the community that were then projected onto paper sculptures. The community-sourced texts came from members of the public who visited the exhibition in the months of February through May of 2024. The installation included an interpretation of a poem type written in Caracas in 1949 by Jose Colmenares\, Alejandra’s Venezuelan grandfather\, who was an educator and an advocate for nature. She combined text and animation using hand-drawn elements and laser-cut objects; the work incorporated the physical manifestation of the original typewritten poem through the text. This was displayed as part of a triptych alongside iterations of animated motifs based on her childhood memories of her grandfather’s garden. \n\n\n\nWater State (2024-2025) is an ongoing experimental animation that began development with the Artist Support Regional Grant from the Cultural Division and a unique one-time screening occurred at the terrace of the Pompano Beach Cultural center sunset as an homage to artist Allan Kaprow. She experiments with the fluid nature of water in collages\, animation\, and cut outs that weave together audiovisual memories from the community that depicts Broward County as a refuge. \n\n\n\nAbout Alejandra Abad:Born in Caracas\, Venezuela\, Alejandra Abad is an interdisciplinary visual artist and educator whose playful storytelling features fragmentation\, folklore\, and mythology. She uses a blend of analog and digital processes to explore belonging and agency by inviting the audience to experience reimagined environments via layering\, abstraction\, and light. Her style is informed by architectural studies at Florida Atlantic University\, Film/Video/New Media/Animation at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and Interdisciplinary Media Art Practices at The University of Colorado.https://alejandraabad.com/

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Tides and Currents
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTIONThursday\, November 7 2024 | 5:30pm-8:00pmFree and open to the public. \n\n\n\n(This event\, originally scheduled for Thursday\, October 17th has been postponed to Thursday\, November 7th 2024.) \n\n\n\nCoral Springs Museum of Art is presenting a new exhibition featuring Julia Zurilla\, Michelle Drummond\, Holly Hanessian\, Evelyn Politzer\, Sharon Lee Hart\, & Aria Nicolette Tan showcased in the Main & East Gallery. \n\n\n\nWater is both a source of life and a force that shapes the fate of entire communities. Tides and Currents explores humanity’s complex and evolving relationship with water\, as it serves as a vital resource\, a pathway for migration\, and a force of nature that demands both respect and adaptation. The exhibition introduces stories of migration across seas with the multimedia work from Julia Zurilla—where water becomes both a bridge to new opportunities and a perilous\, unpredictable expanse. For many\, the ocean is a symbol of hope and survival\, but also a reminder of the risks and tragedies that define the refugee and migrant experience as they navigate dangerous waters in search of safety and a better life. \n\n\n\nAlongside these stories are the urgent realities faced by communities with limited access to potable water\, illustrated with the fabric art works by Michelle Drummond. In these communities\, clean water is a luxury\, and the struggle for its availability defines daily life. This scarcity highlights the inequalities that persist globally\, forcing us to confront our own water consumption practices and the critical importance of environmental stewardship. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also transports us to fishing villages\, where life has long been intertwined with the rhythms of the sea. The paintings from Aria Tan from the body of work Fish Market showcase different scenarios of daily live from a fishing community. Here\, water is more than a resource—it is a way of life. Yet even these resilient communities face new challenges\, from dwindling marine stocks to the growing threat of sargassum blooms\, which choke coastal ecosystems and disrupt marine environments by smothering habitats and entangling animals. In response\, Sharon Lee Hart brings washed-ashore seaweed to her darkroom creating unique photographs that document its intricate structures. \n\n\n\nAs climate change accelerates\, hurricanes and severe storms pose ever-greater threats\, requiring preparedness and adaptation. Holly Hanessian presents Hurricane Emergency Art Kit\, which focuses on sustainable water practices and is filled with hand-made porcelain objects to use while waiting out a storm. Her work considers the ways communities brace for these natural disasters\, highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of those living in coastal areas. Artifacts of hurricane preparedness underscore the importance of readiness in the face of intensifying storms. Featuring the beauty and fragility of the natural environment\, Evelyn Politzer’s fiber art works reminds us on the importance of water conservation\, and the delicate balance in nature. \n\n\n\nIn Tides and Currents\, we are reminded that water—whether as a source of migration\, scarcity\, sustenance\, or danger—defines our shared human experience. The exhibition challenges us to consider our role in preserving this precious resource\, our responsibility in reducing consumption\, and our need for solidarity with those most affected by water’s unpredictable power. Through diverse artistic expressions\, the exhibition paints a picture of resilience\, adaptation\, and survival in a world shaped by water.

SUMMARY:Water State\, projections in the courtyard by Alejandra Abad
DESCRIPTION:Join Venezuelan artist Alejandra Abad for an engaging talk about her past projects\, process\, and recent work where she explores belonging and mutual compassion as key parts of collective wellness. Abad’s current project\, Water State\, relates to sharing stories of refuge in Florida. Through outdoor digital projections Abad will bring the Everglades and our natural world into urban spaces. \nAbout Alejandra Abad: Born in Caracas\, Venezuela\, Alejandra Abad is an interdisciplinary visual artist and educator who explores belonging and mutual compassion as key parts of collective wellness. Through layering\, abstraction\, and light\, she creates new landscapes that relate to place\, family\, and community. Her playful storytelling often features fragmentation\, folklore\, and mythology. Her style is informed by architectural studies at Florida Atlantic University\, Film/Video/New Media/Animation at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and Interdisciplinary Media Art Practices at The University of Colorado. She uses analog and digital processes for the projection of moving images in public spaces which are rooted in her pedagogy of care. These processes often transform drawings\, paintings\, collages\, prints\, and handmade materials into audiovisual elements\, animated shorts\, visual essays\, and site-specific installations that center around community\, collaboration\, and shared oral histories. \nThis has led to a series of works centered on environmental futures and the implications of the anthropocene. Her installation work creates environments that include sculptural elements and video projection that relate the history of anticolonial movements to international surrealism and magical realism – particularly from South America and the Caribbean – and how these elements are interconnected in new spaces. Her work features conceptual and collaborative pieces that work to break down the barriers between artist and audience.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Before I Forget\, Barrio Alto\, Sementerxs & Dialogues Across Walls
DESCRIPTION:Coral Springs Museum of Art is presenting a new exhibition featuring Edison Peñafiel\, Amanda Linares\, and Mitzi Falcón in the Main Gallery\, with Kristin Beck showcased in the East Gallery. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists:Kristin Beck is a writer\, artist\, and native Floridian\, which provides colorful characters along with the intense humidity. Influenced by the area’s vibrant culture\, her work relies on crustacean-hued memories and is imbued with the sound of wild parrots set free by Hurricane Andrew. Beck has exhibited in nearly 50 exhibitions\, including Best in Show at Girls’ Club\, Ft. Lauderdale\, Fla.\, and Gritty in Pink at Bailey Contemporary Arts\, Pompano Beach\, Fla.\, Last Blast at Frenchy Gallery\, New Orleans\, La.\, and Curators as Artists at Warehouse Gallery\, Orlando\, Fla. In 2024\, she received an Artist Support grant from the Broward Cultural Division. \n\n\n\nMitzi Falcón trained as a designer and visual communicologist at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and as a self-taught artist. Mitzi’s visual proposal fuses her experiences with various contemporary issues such as neurodivergences\, migration\, gender inequalities and social inequalities; Falcón not only seeks to convey an opinion or judgment on these issues\, but through the inclusion of objects with high symbolic content and the recreation of scenic fictions\, she seeks reflection\, resonance and critical analysis of the viewer. \n\n\n\nShe works with photography and scenography. \n\n\n\nHis work has recently been exhibited at the Consulate of the United Mexican States in Miami\, Corridor Project – Oslow Norway and the Untitled Art Fair in Miami and is part of several private collections. \n\n\n\nEdison Peñafiel\, originally from Ecuador\, migrated to the United States in 2002. Since graduating from the Florida International University’s Fine Arts program in 2016\, he concentrated his practice on numerous large scale projects\, site-specific\, and immersive installations projects presented at The Bass Museum\, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami\, the Orlando Museum of Art\, the Elsewhere Museum\, the Contemporary Art Center New Orleans\, the Atlantic Center for the Arts\, the USF Contemporary Art Museum\, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale\, Atchugarry Art Center\, among others. Notable awards include: the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation\, the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art\, the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship\, the Green Family Foundation\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. \n\n\n\nAmanda Linares is a Cuban-born visual artist who currently lives and works in Miami. Her work expands like branches using an immense variety of media from design and drawing to installation and photography. Influenced by literature and spatial awareness\, Amanda’s work contains poetic language while exploring narration and/or space through the use of reflection\, transparency\, revelation\, found objects\, and typographical solutions. Although in constant change\, her work intimately dances between many universal issues\, such as identity\, displacement\, absence\, and reconnection. Her eagerness for learning new ways to express herself led her to study graphic design at New World School of the Arts. She is currently a resident artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public.
