Beginning Wheel Throwing – Ages 16+
This course introduces students to the basics of throwing pottery and provides an understanding of ceramic terms, processes and knowledge needed to use the pottery studio safely and independently. Topics include centering clay, throwing basic forms, crafting handles and glazing. Sessions include demonstrations and practice time under the guidance of the instructor. Students are encouraged to practice between class sessions and will have access to the studio during scheduled open studio time. New students may not miss more than two classes and must attend the first class and the glazing class. Hand building experience is not required but recommended. Supplies: bring towel and paper towels, Clay must be purchased from the museum. You may bring your own tools or purchase them at the museum. Class includes glaze, firing, and open studio time. (Open studio times subject to change – call the front desk in advance to verify studio schedule.)

Continuing Wheel Throwing – Ages 16+
This class is designed for those who have beginning wheel throwing experience and want to further refine their skills and progress to more challenging levels. It also serves as a refresher course for students who have previously taken throwing classes but have not thrown for some time. Prerequisite: Beginner Wheel Throwing. New students may not miss more than two classes and must attend the first class and the glazing class. Students are encouraged to practice between class sessions and will have access to the studio during scheduled open studio time. Supplies: bring towel and paper towels, Clay must be purchased from the museum. You may bring your own tools or purchase them at the museum. Class includes glaze, firing, and open studio time. This class explores techniques including pinching, coils, and slabs, and provides an overview of ceramic materials and glazing. Classes provide demonstrations and individual work time with instructor guidance. Students are encouraged to practice between class sessions and will have access to the studio during scheduled open studio time. New students may not miss more than two classes and must attend the first class and the glazing class. All skill levels are welcome. Continuing Handbuilding – Ages 16+
Through a combination of demonstrations and individual work time, students will further develop their hand building skills while making distinctive pieces guided by instructor. A variety of construction techniques will include soft slabs, stiff slabs, and coils. Students will learn to add flair and professionalism to their pieces by adding finishing touches such as feet and handles. This class will help individuals develop and express their own unique style through clay. Students will have access to the studio during scheduled open studio time. Supplies: bring towel and paper towels, Clay must be purchased from the museum. You may bring your own tools or purchase them at the museum. Class includes glaze, firing, and open studio time. Ceramics Guided Open Studio – Ages 16+
An experienced instructor will be on-hand to provide unique demonstrations, pointers, tips, and assistance while you work independently on projects. Take your ceramic work to the next level in this stimulating creative environment tailored to improving your specific projects! Prerequisite: Students must have taken Beginning or Continuing Handbuilding or Wheel Throwing at the museum. To use the wheel students must have successfully completed Beginning or Continuing Wheel Throwing. To handbuild, students must have completed any clay course.

Pottery Sampler 16+
Have you ever been curious about working with clay, but felt unsure of committing to a whole course? Then this is the class for you! Pottery Sampler allows you to come into our Ceramics studio and try out working with clay on the potters’ wheel. After the single session, you will select one piece and we will dry, fire and glaze your work. (You will select the glaze color) Once your work is completed you will be contacted for pickup. Supplies and firing included.

Intro to Oil Painting – Ages 16+
If you have ever marveled at an oil painting made by the great painters of art history and wondered how they controlled their paint the way that they did, then this course is your answer! Using a photographic reference of your choice, you will be guided toward creating an original oil painting through the traditional techniques of the masters. Learn the foundations of using acrylic paints and successfully complete your very own paintings by the end of the session! Students will work with concepts of color theory, color mixing, textures, and brushwork techniques. Each session will explore different topics and subjects of acrylic painting. Plein Air Painting – Ages 16+
Take a breath of fresh air and get your paintbrushes ready! Students will be free of the traditional studio environment and take their painting outdoors! Using the natural views around the museum, Mullins Park, and other nearby off-site locations, students will perfect their acrylic painting skills by observing nature. Each session is different; sign up for one or several! Be prepared to drive to off-site locations. Though class will mostly be held in shaded areas, pack for the outdoor setting – water, sunblock, hat, etc. Class schedule subject to change in the event of inclement weather. Supplies not included. Painting Sampler 16+
It’s time to start learning to paint! Grab a brush, a canvas, and paint – but which paint? Acrylic, and Watercolor, and Gouache, oh my! With all the choices available it can be hard to know which paint is best for you. This workshop will make it easy to know by introducing you to the working properties of Acrylic, Watercolor, and Gouache paints. In the end you will gain insightful tips and tricks from our knowledgeable instructor and have created your own handy reference guide. This is an introductory level workshop, and no prior experience is required. Samples will be created on paper, but students are welcome to bring canvas or boards to test on as well. Intro to Drawing – Ages 16+
Drawing is the foundation of visual art, and improving drawing skills will help develop artistry in fields ranging from painting to sculpture and beyond. Using a variety of subject matter, techniques, and design principles, students learn the traditional and modern methods of drawing. This is a beginner’s class but is also a valuable refresher for artists of every level. This course is an essential first step in in your creative journey! The excitement of drawing is not confined to the classroom! In this course, students will learn to draw while out and about in the local area! Take advantage of the unique architectural structures and natural habitats around the museum to make drawings from direct observation. Photography
Photo Foundations – Ages 16+
This is an entry level course into the world of photography, where students will get to explore the themes and styles of photography such as storytelling through images, capturing nature through landscapes and more. Students will get to fully immerse themselves in the photo making process by learning how to control their camera settings such as shutter speed, ISO, F/stop, exposure compensation, and white balance. Action Photography – Ages 16+
The camera has the powerful ability to capture the energy of movement, whether in sports, dance, or just everyday life. Develop your understanding of lighting, composition, camera settings, and the specific approaches needed to improve your action photographs. Students will be given instruction, practice assignments for capturing action photos outside of class for review and discussion, and some class periods will incorporate off-site photo sessions to apply techniques in real world settings. All skill levels are welcome, but experience with photography is encouraged; this is not a beginner level course.

Private Class Lessons
Looking for one on one instruction? Private classes are great for artists that are interested in developing their skills and advancing them to the next level. These special lessons are especially great for artists who prefer focused one on one instruction or for someone who can’t make it to a scheduled group class.
