Summer Art Camps

CULTURAL CAMP                          BOOK HERE

2- Week Camp Sessions (Ages 61/2-12) 9:30am-3:00pm

Budding artist will take a journey across the globe during our Summer Cultural Camps. Each day campers will have 3 different studio classes allowing them to explore various media and projects throughout the day. Now offering limited enrollment in large spaces to accommodate Health & Safety practices. Supplies + Final Art Show included each session!

Daily Schedule:
Students will stay with their age group and rotate together as a class to each of their 3 classes. We are offering lower class sizes to accommodate health and safety practices.

Last Friday of session | Family Art Exhibit from 3:00-4:00pm enjoy the exhibit beginning at 3:00pm with the kids and then take artwork with you starting at 3:30pm. (Please no early removal of art)

Jaw-Dropping Japan: Due to Japan’s long stretch in isolation from the outside world, it formed a distinct culture inspired by its beautiful island. Discover Japan’s rich visual history from Cherry Blossom Trees and woodblock prints to Anime and the bright lights Modern Tokyo in this exciting camp!

Session B: June 27- July 8, no camp July 4
Awesome Australia: Are you ready to go down-under? Take a journey into the outback with the kangaroos and koalas and learn about Aboriginal art and the Great Barrier Reef. Join us on this exploration into the continent of Australia!

Session C: July 11-July 22
Super Scandinavia: Whether you like castles and dragons or princesses and Vikings, this camp is for you! From their woodcarving, to intricate knotwork, to depictions of fantastic animals, enjoy exploring the unique and iconic culture of the Scandinavians!

Session D: July 25 – August 5
Magnificent Mexico: Take a trip through time, from the ancient art of the Maya and Aztec to modern day murals and mosaics! Explore Mexico’s vibrant parades, piñatas, and even talk tacos! Learn all about this rich culture and discover the marvels of Mexico!

Introduce your mini masters to the magic of art! Discover the Museum through a 2- weeklong summer camp of story time, gallery visits and hands – on art making activities. In the studio, we’ll explore the artmaking process with using many materials and techniques such as painting, collage, and sculpture for some messy fun. Note: each Art Start session will finish different projects and runs for 3 hours daily for 2 weeks. Art Start is for ages 5-6 years old; 5 year old campers must have attended kindergarten or VPK to attend.

These immersive studio classes are intended for aspiring artists and designers ages 13-17. Learn from teaching artists who will share their artistic skills and experiences first-hand. Explore new art processes to further develop as an artist. Sessions are held for 2 weeks with morning and afternoon class options. Please bring snacks and bottled water daily.

Painting and Drawing- 1:00pm -4:00pm These painting studios are designed to develop students’ overall techniques and artistic creativity. Use different paint mediums and explore a variety of subjects ranging from animals to nature and everything in between! Every class offers something new to learn. Supplies are included.

Session B: June 27- July 8, no camp July 4
3D and Mixed Media – 9:00am-12:00pm This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of 3-Dimensional Design and Mixed Media. Students will use a variety of materials to create both freestanding and relief designs with techniques in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. Supplies are included.

Printmaking – 1:00pm-4:00pm This class focuses on the fundamentals of printmaking. Learn to experiment with various techniques and practices of printmaking. Develop your own style and designs from start to finish. Supplies are included. 

Session C: July 11 – July 22
Portfolio Development – 1:00pm-4:00pm Want to take you portfolio to the next level? Students will participate in group critiques and enhance their body of work for college admission. Supplies are included, but teens are encourages to bring current works in their portfolio. 

Session D: July 25 – August 5
Style Your Sketchbook -9:00am-12:00pm Take your doodles and scribbles to the next level with this Sketchbook art class. Turn any page into a masterpiece with a variety of drawing materials, subject matter, and one-on-one guidance. A good sketchbook is key to developing good artwork, and this class will give you the tools you need to develop your style! Supplies are included.

Painting and Drawing -1:00pm-4:00pm These painting studios are designed to develop students’ overall techniques and artistic creativity. Get hands on with clay in the ceramics studio! These classes introduce a combination of elaborate techniques in hand building, wheel throwing, and glazing processes. It is highly recommended that students enroll in hand building before taking wheel throwing.

Selfie 101 (13-17)
Selfies seem as easy as holding out your arm and pressing a button, but do you know about the simple tricks behind a successful and engaging photograph? This crash course teaches about lighting, context, positioning, angles, and all the camera settings that will allow you to up your photography game while having fun taking lots of pics individually and in groups! Students will also have the unique opportunity to photograph in the museum gallery interacting with the exciting Rushing Down exhibit on display. By the end of this course all your friends will be asking you how your selfies look so good! Simple digital camera or cell required.

Fashion Illustration + Fundamentals (13-17)
In this course, students will have fun exploring the fun world of fashion! Students will start by designing outfits using markers, paint and mixed media on paper. Then, students will be taught basic hand sewing with beads and sequins to create and embellish their own t-shirt. If you have a “passion for fashion” then this class is for you! Looking for one on one instruction? Private classes are great for artists that are interested in developing their skills and advancing them to the next level. These special lessons are especially great for artists who prefer focused one on one instruction or for someone who can’t make it to a scheduled group class. This course introduces students to the basics of throwing pottery and provides them with an understanding of ceramic terms, processes and knowledge needed to use the pottery studio safely and independently. Topics include centering clay, throwing basic forms, handles and glazing. Sessions include demonstrations and practice time under the guidance of the instructor. Students are encouraged to practice between class sessions and have free access to the pottery studio. Continuing Handbuilding
Through a combination of demonstrations and individual work time, students will further develop their hand building skills while making distinctive pieces guided by instructor. A variety of construction techniques will include soft slabs, stiff slabs, and coils. Students will learn to add flair and professionalism to their pieces by adding finishing touches such as feet and handles. Clay as Canvas
Many are familiar with clay being used to create pottery and sculpture, but it can also be formed into flat surfaces intended to highlight color and shape. In this course, students will create assorted canvases of clay that are painted with glaze to create beautiful wall-hanging art. Hanging mechanisms and mixed-media considerations are also explored. Students are encouraged to practice between class sessions and will have free access to our pottery studio. Pottery Sampler
Have you ever been curious about working with clay, but felt unsure of committing to a whole course? Then this is the class for you! Pottery Sampler allows you to come into our Ceramics studio and try out working with clay on the potters’ wheel. After the single session, you will select one piece and we will dry, fire and glaze your work. (You will select the glaze color) Once your work is completed you will be contacted for pickup. Portrait Drawing
This class is designed to learn how to draw the portrait working from a cast, face cast and photo references. Students will learn about forms, values, halftones, hard and soft lines as well as relationship lines. With the knowledge of what lies beneath the skin, coupled with learning about structural planes, students will have a better understanding to complete a portrait from a photo reference utilizing the information learned in the previous lessons. Figure Drawing
If you want to learn anatomy and how to draw the figure, this course is for you. From gestural-action line poses students will build the figure through proportion, shape, value, and relationship lines. Students will also learn techniques for developing volume through half tones, highlights, and cast shadows in a variety of materials. Students will work with concepts of color theory, color mixing, textures, and brushwork techniques. Sample the world of photography. Students will get to explore the themes and styles of photography such as storytelling through images, freezing motion in sports, capturing nature through landscapes and more. A variety of construction techniques will include soft slabs, stiff slabs, and coils. Have you ever been curious about working with clay, but felt unsure of committing to a whole course? Then this is the class for you! Pottery Sampler allows you to come into our Ceramics studio and try out working with clay on the potters’ wheel. Plein Air Painting – Ages 16+
Take a breath of fresh air and get your paintbrushes ready! Students will be free of the traditional studio environment and take their painting outdoors! Using the natural views around the museum, Mullins Park, and other nearby off-site locations, students will perfect their acrylic painting skills by observing nature. Painting Sampler 16+
It’s time to start learning to paint! Grab a brush, a canvas, and paint – but which paint? Acrylic, and Watercolor, and Gouache, oh my! With all the choices available it can be hard to know which paint is best for you. Photo Foundations – Ages 16+
This is an entry level course into the world of photography, where students will get to explore the themes and styles of photography such as storytelling through images, capturing nature through landscapes and more. Students will get to fully immerse themselves in the photo making process by learning how to control their camera settings such as shutter speed, ISO, F/stop, exposure compensation, and white balance. Action Photography – Ages 16+
The camera has the powerful ability to capture the energy of movement, whether in sports, dance, or just everyday life. Develop your understanding of lighting, composition, camera settings, and the specific approaches needed to improve your action photographs. Students will be given instruction, practice assignments for capturing action photos outside of class for review and discussion, and some class periods will incorporate off-site photo sessions to apply techniques in real world settings.
