Benson’s Flying Herons
(Frank Weston Benson’s Herons and Lillies, 1934 )

Frank Weston Benson, most widely known for his murals in the Library of Congress, also loved studying and depicting birds. Herons and Lillies, 1934 is painting inspired by Benson’s memory of herons from his trip to the Florida Keys. We will explore and uncover the compositional elements that make this painting so striking and energetic, from the cropping elements to the angle of the horizon line and the distribution of color throughout the canvas. Whether you are a bird enthusiast or want to learn how to create a dynamic composition, step into Benson’s world and create a vivid painting of your own.
